A key license could have been sold to yet another company in an acquisition during the last decade, or that company could have gone out of business and no longer exist, meaning it's impossible to get the proper licensing again. Which means big bucks and tons of time for something that might not even pan out in the end. Trying to get all the legal licensing lined up for a re-release of an 11 year old game on a different platform can be nightmare-tier stuff in Japan. Hell, this is why the US version of Tales of Zestiria's main theme song does not have it's lyrics. Often in Japan, those licenses for use only extend to specific products, specific releases of those products, or releases to specific countries. Mistwalker made the game, but anything that was outsourced to a third party such as music, game engines, media format licenses, etc are not owned by Mistwalker and were licensed for that specific product. Putting that talent on a Lost Odyssey port means taking them away from other projects that are highly likely to be more successful/profitable uses of their time.Ĥ) Japanese media licensing is notoriously hot garbage. Anyone still working there who's familiar with the Lost Odyssey code is already working on something else, either something new or something more lucrative like one of their mobile games. They don't just press "Compile to PC" and call it a day, porting an Xbox 360 game to PC is a massive undertaking, especially if you never intended for it to be multiplatform in the first place.Ĭ) Mistwalker is a small studio with a different focus. You have to ask "why would someone pay $40+ for this old game when they could spend that same money on something much newer?" The lower you make that price, the more people you need to actually want to buy this old game to make it a worthwhile project financially.ī) Porting games, especially previous generation console games, is a lengthy, difficult, and very expensive process.
